This week: Chaotic play: clay and murals

I find February is the perfect time to go deep with the messiest mediums as possible.  So without further ado, we are juggling painting projects, clay and working on the playground mural.  I find that painting and clay are so hands on and in that way become all consuming.  Once students understand the technical basics of the medium, they are free to play and explore in their own styles and ways.  With painting those basics underpainting, layering and mixing paint, with clay it has to do with learning slab, coil, scoring and slipping as well as the additive and subtractive processes of carving and adding texture.

What this allows for is creativity within constraints.  And who doesn't benefit from creatively problem solving using the artistic process!  Attached are some work in progress pieces.  Note:  also includes images of the playground mural that I will explain in greater depth with another blogpost.
