Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!

Hi!  Thanks for stopping by!  This year is going to be another fun year in art here at SCS middle school.
We're focussing on the idea of being creative "design thinkers."  In this manner, we'll explore ideas surrounding art and art-making and use problem solving skills to come up with unique art solutions.  In "normal" speak:  we're gonna make some cool art, but be thoughtful about it.

Here's a peek at some "notan" from Alpha 7, one of our first projects of the year.

Carin Lilly's 2nd Trimester Learning Summary

This trimester we did some work in Photoshop elements on the computer, worked in gridding and transferring images from our work.  Some completed paintings of this work, others gridded and transferred nonobjective designs for painting.  With paint, we explored value and color mixing, as well as expressive brushstrokes.

We also created plates for the ArtStorm benefit using clay, glaze and paint.  Students are able to use art to make a difference within their community.  We hope to see you all at the benefit (see info in post below)!

We also have embarked on a study of "street art" and aeresol art in conjunction with a variety of subjects being studied in the core curriculum.  In Holden, we discussed the notion of power, art, and personal responsibility in regards to grafitti and street art.  In Winton, we talked about art and how it can be revolutionary and create change.  In Alpha, we talked of it in terms of how we define ourselves and about grafitti subculture.  Art is a powerful way to explore and reinforce the themes that arise in core classes, adding another layer of depth and understanding.

Its been a fun and exciting trimester!  I really am enjoying getting to know this community of learners and educators!  Don't hesitate to drop me an email with any questions or concerns.
